Habitat Conditions in North-Central U. S. – June 3, 2008

Spring precipitation in the form of snow and rain improved habitat conditions for waterfowl production in many areas of the Northern Great Plains. Excellent habitat conditions are present over much of Nebraska, including the Sandhills, in eastern South Dakota, southern Minnesota and northern Iowa. Dry conditions and poor habitat are present across much of North Dakota and eastern Montana. Warm days were few this spring and the waterfowl migration was delayed slightly in this region. In the drier areas such as central North Dakota waterfowl remained in large groups on permanent wetlands during May. Some flooding occurred in Iowa and resulted in below average Canada goose production again this spring.
